Who We Are

The Alabama Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons is the only statewide organization representing Alabama ophthalmologists and their patients. The Academy works to advance the art and science of ophthalmology by promoting superior care for patients through education, awareness and legislative advocacy.

Members of the Alabama Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons are board-certified ophthalmologists. Our members are physicians and are dedicated to lifelong learning and professional integrity so we may provide the best possible care to our patients

Our Mission

To represent Alabama ophthalmologists and their patients; and to advance the art and science of ophthalmology by promoting superior care for patients through education, awareness and legislative advocacy.

What We Do

ALEPS is a medical association located in Montgomery, Ala., comprised of ophthalmologists who are licensed to practice medicine in Alabama and/or other states. The purpose of ALEPS is the promotion and advancement of ophthalmic medicine in all phases.

The business of the Academy is conducted by a Board of Directors and Executive Director. Board meetings are held periodically at various locations throughout the state and each summer at the Southern Eye Congress in Sandestin, Florida.

The Board elects a president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer to oversee its operations.

Membership is limited to licensed ophthalmologists with an M.D. or D.O. degree. Special memberships are available upon request and approval by the Board of Directors, to licensed physicians from other sub-specialties of medicine.

ALAEPS co-hosts an annual Southeast Eye Regional Scientific Meeting each summer with the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee Academies of Ophthalmology. The meeting is open to ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians from throughout the country.

ALAEPS works in conjunction with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, on legislative issues at the state and federal levels. See www.alabamamedicine.org.

ALAEPS is represented at the national level by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). See www.aao.org.

ALAEPS provides complimentary eye care services to disadvantaged Alabamians through its 501 (c) (3) EyeCare Alabama program. As of January, 2015, EyeCare Alabama had provided over One-Million Dollars ($1,000,000.00) of free eye care services to over four-thousand disadvantaged Alabamians.
